Bill Elliott #9 Motorcraft Ford

Hello once again diecasts fans, and welcome back to the NASCAR Racing Champions blog~ In today's post, we're going to be taking a look at Evergreen Speedway, in Monroe, Washington.. and more specifically, we're gonna be rehashing the 1991 "Motorcraft Quality Parts 500", which was the main event in a weekend long excursion at the famed Speedway~

Evergreen Speedway is a .646 mile paved track, that has a seating capacity of 15,000~ The track consists of 5/8 mile outer oval, as well as a 3/8 mile inner oval, a 1/5 mile inner oval, a 1/8 mile drag strip, and a figure 8 track, are all incorporated into the track layout~ While the Cup guys had the weekend off, Bill Elliott and several other Cup drivers headed to Evergreen Speedway to compete in the Motorcraft Quality Parts 500, in the Winston West Series~ So here we go, off to Monroe, Washington and the Evergreen State Fairgrounds~

Elliott pitting in the 1990 "Motorcraft 500"~

The weekend kicked off on Friday, July 12th, with what I would assume would have been a practice, or qualifying session~ I'm not sure what they did on Friday, but they did something~ This was followed up the next day with the "Sound Advice 100", a 100 lap Winston Northwest Tour race~ Canadian Pete Harding led 76 laps from the pole position, but was spun late in the race by Dirk Stephens, who was passed three laps later by Ron Eaton, who led the final 16 laps on his way to the checkered flag in the #7 Lake's Body Shop Pontiac~

On Sunday, July 14th, the main event took place, and the field was already set for the "Motorcraft Quality Parts 500", with Sterling Marlin beating out Bill Elliott for the pole position, with a lap of 98.907 mph~ Marlin was driving the #22 Maxwell House Coffee Ford, owned by Junior Johnson, while Elliott was in the #9 Motorcraft Ford, owned by Harry Melling~

Other notable drivers in the field consisted of Rick Carelli, Chad Little, Ron Hornaday, Jr., Geoff Bodine, Bill Sedgwick, Hershel McGriff (ran his final race at age 84, and claims he's going to race one more next year, at age 90), and Jim Bown, along with series regulars Bill Schmitt, Mike Chase, Butch Gilliland (David Gilliland's father), Robert Sprague (Jack Sprague's cousin), and John Krebs~

From the very start of the race, this thing was a wreck fest~ It's a shame this race isn't posted anywhere on the internet, because it sure seems like a wild, awesome race~ I'm just having to make stuff up the way it looks on the record books~ So on the very first lap of the race, there were two separate crashes that took out three drivers~ The first crash happened when Mike Chase got tapped from behind, and collected Larry Gunselman following his spin, and the second happened on the lap following the crash, when Wayne Jacks couldn't get his car slowed down enough, and he rammed into the wreckage of Chase and Gunselman~

By the end of the race, the caution flag waved 14 times, totaling 105 laps ran under yellow~ Along with the crashes, eight teams suffered blown engines in the grueling event~ Pole sitter Sterling Marlin led 24 laps before fading, and eventually crashing out of the race on lap 279~ Chad Little started third, and he took the lead over from Marlin, and stayed there for 80 laps before his engine expired on lap 180~ Bill Schmitt stayed out under caution and led four laps, and John Krebs led a lap during green flag pit stops~

Bill Sedgwick got out front in the #75 Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet, where he led a total of 13 laps in the Wayne Spears owned machine, but for the most part at this point, it was Geoff Bodine leading the way in the #11 Budweiser Ford, owned by Junior Johnson~ With his second car out of the race, Johnson was banking on Bodine to make up the difference, and pick up the win for the famed team~

Someone had to put this sticker on the back of every card for this one~
Bill Elliott #9 Motorcraft Ford NASCAR Racing Champions 1/64 NASCAR diecast blog Evergreen 1991

Bill Elliott was the 1987 winner of this event, and the pole winner in 1990, and with his outside pole for this event, many people were rooting for Awesome Bill to pull it off again at Evergreen that day~ Bill's approach for the race was to lay low, and save his stuff for the end of the race... a wise move considering how many engine/mechanical issues teams were having~

The bad thing was, he waited a little too long, and as he was trying to work his way to the lead, he was caught up in a crash on lap 417, which ended his day with a 12th place finish~ With Bill's exit from the event, only 14 of the 36 drivers who started the race were left out there~ The 10th place finisher was 46 laps down.. it was a slaughterhouse to say the least~

In the end it was the dominant Budweiser Ford of Geoff Bodine who would come out victorious, having led 378 of 500 laps on his way to victory lane~ BGN regular Jim Bown was runner-up, followed by Bill Sedgwick, Jon Paques in the #09 Red Line Oil Ponitac was fourth, and Billy Jac Shaw finished out the top 5 in the #93 Taco Bell Buick, owned by Troy Beebe's father, Allen~ Bodine won the race from the 21st starting spot, in his only ever race at Evergreen Speedway~

I was really excited to get to work on this post at first, but once I found out that there was no film of it anywhere on the internet, and no photos from the 1991 event, I was pretty bummed out~ Footage and photos are all we have left to remember these races by, other than stat sheets, and when there is not footage or photos, a part of history is all but forgotten~ I did everything I could to find out more about this event, but it's just one of them things where sometimes all you can do just isn't good enough~

This is a great looking car however, and the card is beyond awesome for the 1991 set~ Why couldn't Racing Champions make awesome cards like this for all of the drivers?~ Some guys got pretty junky looking cards, and that sucks~ I tried to look up if there was a possibility of Motorcraft becoming a primary sponsor for Elliott at some point during his tenure with Junior Johnson, but I couldn't find anything about it, so I'm guessing this was just a deal they had when they ran the Winston West races~

I give this car an A+ on the Racing Champions quality scale, as it's a beautiful car, and an awesome card~ I really wish I could have found more out about the race, but sometimes you just come up empty~ Maybe someday in the future someone will post the race, or photos from the event, and I can include them into the post at that time, but until then, this is all we've got.. so let's move on to the bonus car for this post~

Steve Boley #10 Ingram Racing Chevrolet~
Steve Boley #10 Ingram Racing Chevrolet 1992 Racing Champions 1/64 NASCAR diecast blog BGN Busch

Well, this was probably the easiest Photoshop custom I've ever made~ In 1992, Steve Boley made his BGN debut in this #10 Ingram Racing Chevrolet, owned by Jack Ingram~ Ingram bought up some old Sterling Marlin #10 Maxwell House cars, well.. at least one, and simply took the Maxwell House logos off of it, and ran it with the same paint scheme that Marlin raced with~

Boley's first race was the "Miller 500" @ Martinsville, where he qualified 29th, and finished 18th~ He then ran the "Mountain Dew 400" @ Hickory, where he crashed out after 198 laps, and finished 21st~ His best finish came at Lanier for the "Nestle 300", where he qualified 21st (career high), and finished in 8th (career high)~ His final race for Ingram came in the "Granger Select 200" @ Dublin, where he rolled off 24th, and finished in 19th place~

Steve made two more starts in the BGN series in 1995, with a best finish of 25th @ Richmond in the "Hardee's 250", driving the #05 Key Motorsports Chevrolet, owned by Curtis Key~ He was a dirt track ace from Iowa, as well as the 2000 NASCAR O'Reilly All-Star Dirt Track Series champion~

Thank you all for visiting the blog~ Please share this post on social media with your friends, and click the "follow" button that the top right hand side of this page~ Below are some videos on Bill's career, since I can't find any footage of the Evergreen race~ Enjoy them, and I'll be back soon for another installment of the NASCAR Racing Champions blog~ :)

Bill Elliott #94 McDonald's Mac Tonight Ford

Welcome back to the NASCAR Racing Champions diecast blog~ While I was browsing through the news the other day, I seen where Jamie McMurray was gonna have a special "Mac Tonight" paint scheme for the throwback race @ Darlington this season~ This got me so excited that I decided to do a post on Bill Elliott's version of the car today~ I loved Mac Tonight, he was awesome.. and the car Bill drove was even more awesome~

I miss the days when McDonald's had all their little characters~ Mac Tonight, Mayor McCheese, the Hamburglar, and so on.. these characters were designed to make kids scream for hours that they wanted to go to McDonald's, and it worked~ If you were a parent in the 80's and 90's, you know quite well how many "Happy meals" were purchased during this time~ McDonald's even sold plates, cups, and basically anything they could put Ronald McDonald and the gang's faces on~

Bill had some awesome "special" paint schemes, but my favorite was probably this one, although the Batman Forever car was pretty dang cool too~ This car wasn't ran in that many races, but it was in more than the Batman Forever car, or the Piggly Wiggly car of Kevin Lepage~ Well, what am I waiting for?~ Let's dive into this thing, so I can get to McDonald's for a Big Mac!~ :D

The wonderfully cool Mac Tonight, doing his thing~
Bill Elliott #94 Mac Tonight Racing Champions 1/64 NASCAR diecast blog Jamie McMurray Darlington throwback 2016 1997 1998

Mac Tonight was first used nationwide in 1987, and he was created to boost McDonald's sales after 4 PM~ He sang a song that was similar to the tune "Mack the Knife", a song made popular by Bobby Darin~ In 1989, Darin's son filed a lawsuit against McDonald's, stating that the song infringes upon his deceased father's trademark without prior permission~ McDonald's was then forced to remove the song from all TV and radio advertisements~

Everyone loved "Mac" however, as sales at some McDonald's boasted a 10 % increase in evening/late night sales~ I remember getting a little toy Mac in a Happy meal when I was young, I think he was riding a moped or a bike~ Eventually, the Mac Tonight commercials seemed to just fizzle out~

He was brought back in 1997 for the 10 year anniversary of his nationwide debut~ Bill Elliott was currently being sponsored by McDonald's, so his car would sometimes feature the special "Mac Tonight" theme~ I remember the first time I saw him live in this car at Bristol, in the 1997 Goody's 500~ That was actually the debut of this new paint scheme~ I watched that car all night long too, I had never seen a car with stars all over it, and a dang moon head guy wearing sunglasses on the hood~ This was great!~ :D

Bill Elliott hero card featuring the #94 Mac Tonight Ford~

When I found out that Bill was gonna be running this car for the first time at Bristol, I couldn't wait to get to the track to see it!~ I had already seen pictures of it, but I wanted to see the real thing~ And man, was it sharp out there.. under the lights of Bristol!~ Elliott started 36th that evening, and was able to salvage a 16th place finish, albeit three laps off the pace of race winner, Dale "Boring" Jarrett~ I was so mad that Jarrett won, because he bores me to death, and I was pulling for Dick Trickle, who managed to finish in 3rd place~

Bill's next race in the Mac Tonight machine was in the Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 @ Richmond, where he sat on the pole in what would turn out to be his final pole position as an owner/driver~ After leading 43 laps during the early parts of the race, Elliott's car began to fade away, and he eventually finished in 30th place... 5 laps down to race winner, Dale "Boring" Jarrett~ This was also the Cup series debut of Kenny Irwin, who sat on the outside pole for the event, and led 12 laps, finishing in 8th place~

The #94 Mac Tonight Ford awaiting the race~

Next up was the CMT 300 @ Loudon, where Elliott qualified in the 10th spot~ He had a decent race, remaining on the lead lap and finishing in 11th place~ Steve Grissom, who finished a career high 4th place in the first race at Loudon earlier in the year, again finished 4th, tying his Cup series best effort~ Jeff Gordon was the race winner, followed by Ernie Irvan, Bobby Hamilton, Grissom, and Ricky Craven rounded out the top 5~

The series next stopped @ Dover for the MBNA 400~ Bill qualified in 13th place, and again ran decent during the race~ He never led, but was able to hold on to an 8th place finish~ Mark Martin won the event, which only had one caution (for "Dum Dum" Michael Waltrip), while Kyle Petty, who led for 191 laps, finished 3rd after having to pit for a splash and go with only a few laps remaining~ It would be his last top 5 finish until the 2007 Coca-Cola 600~

The final race of the season for the Mac Tonight theme came in the Hanes 500 @ Martinsville~ Elliott qualified in 16th, and was able to pull off a top 5 finish, with a 5th place run~ Rusty Wallace dominated the event, leading 226 of the 500 laps, but was black flagged (wrongly, I must say) by NASCAR for jumping the start, and finished in 15th, as the last car on the lead lap~ This gave the win to Virginia's own, Jeff Burton~

Bill drove the #94 Mac Tonight Ford for one more race in the 1998 Cup season, the Goody's 500 night race @ Bristol~ I think it's cool that I was at the first, and last race he ever ran this car in~ I knew about the first race, but I didn't actually know his last race in the car came at Bristol until I wrote this post today~ I just remember being there and seeing it again.. watching it shine in the night as it went around the track~

Elliott started 27th in the event, and was only able to salvage a 19th place finish out of the deal~ The race was won by Mark Martin, who led 190 of 500 laps, and had just lost his father the week before~ A still grieving Martin celebrated in victory lane, in what had to have been a very special moment for him after the loss~ Jeremy Mayfield led a surprising 173 laps, and ended up finishing in 8th place, and Kevin Lepage picked up his first career top 10, with a 10th place finish~

Well, I just decided to throw a few more items down here this time~ This isn't even all of the Mac Tonight diecasts that I've got~ I've got the gold one, and I think somewhere I have a hauler, or a Dually truck~ :P I really love this truck the most out of all of them~ Its little hood opens, and its tail gate goes down, so that's pretty cool too~

I love all of the Mac Tonight cars, and they really look awesome all displayed together~ The card I used for these was from the gold car.. I don't have cards for the 1/64's.. I think they didn't come with one~ I thought about making a custom card, but I couldn't find many pics of the Mac Tonight car to work with, and I couldn't waste one, because I needed them for the post~

I'm excited we're gonna get to see this paint scheme back out on the track, I just hope Jamie McFlurry doesn't fudd it all up~ I'm not a big fan of his, but I'll pull for him during that race, just for the sake of the car~ The Bojangles Southern 500 @ Darlington is gonna be an awesome event, and I just can't wait to see all the awesome paint schemes, especially the Tide car!~ (Even though I don't like Kenseth)~ I'm gonna easily give this car an A+ on the Racing Champions quality scale, as it's one of the coolest, and at the time, most innovative paint schemes of all time~

I'd like to thank everyone for stopping in for a bit, I hope you enjoyed the post, and please remember to share it via Facebook, Twitter, or any other form of social media out there~ I'm looking forward to the Bristol races this weekend, especially the truck race tonight!~ Go #75!~ Below are some videos featuring Elliott and his career in NASCAR~ Enjoy them, and have a great weekend!~ :)

Bill Elliott #94 McDonald's/Batman Forever Thunderbat

Hello, and welcome to another edition of the NASCAR Racing Champions 1/64 diecast blog~ Your one stop blog for 80's - 90's NASCAR history, as well as Racing Champions 1/64 diecast reviews~ In today's post, we're gonna be going back to 1995, and looking at Bill Elliott's time in the #94 McDonald's/Batman Forever Thunderbird, or as it was so aptly titled the "Thunderbat"~

This paint scheme ran in three races during the 1995 Winston Cup season, and was an instant favorite with the fans of the movie, as well as the NASCAR community~ I was a big fan of the car, as well as the Batman franchise (though I leaned more towards the earlier stuff), so this car was a must have for my collection as a child, and is still cherished all these years later, though I had to buy another one because I damaged my cars as a kid~ Without further adieu, I give you Bill Elliott's Batman Forever Ford Thunderbat~

Bill poses for a promo shoot with Batman~
Bill Elliott #94 Batman Racing Champions 1/64 NASCAR diecast blog

The new Batman Forever movie was highly anticipated amongst the many legions of diehard Batman fans, as well as highly promoted by the movie company~ As part of a tie-in with McDonald's (Bill's sponsor at the time), it was decided that Elliott would drive the "McDonald's Batman Forever" car in three races during the 1995 season, to help promote the upcoming film~ This was the second time in NASCAR history that a car had been used to promote a movie, with the first being Dale Jarrett's Hardee's/Ghostbusters II Pontiac in 1989~

Bill's first race in the car came under the lights, in the Coca-Cola 600 @ Charlotte~ He qualified the car in 19th, but he was involved in a solo crash on lap 135, which ended his day, and resulted in a disappointing 39th place finish~ The race was won by Bobby Labonte, and his brother Terry finished runner up~ Michael Waltrip had a surprisingly strong run, leading for nine laps, while finishing in 3rd place~

Elliott and Batman getting friendly with each other~
Bill Elliott #94 Batman Racing Champions 1/64 NASCAR diecast blog

Elliott next drove the car in the UAW-GM Teamwork 500 @ Pocono, and didn't have a very good qualifying session~ He would start the race in 25th, but was confident he could move to the front during the race~ He was able to move to the front, but never led during the race, and settled for a nice 6th place finish~

The race was won by Texas Terry Labonte, and I about cried~ I was pulling for Ted Musgrave, who led for 6 laps, but ended up finishing runner up to Labonte~  Ken Schrader, who won the pole for the event, led for 18 laps and finished in 3rd place~ Sterling Marlin came home 4th in the Kodak Chevrolet, and Hut Stricklin finished 5th, giving him back to back top 5 finishes, the only time in his career he ever accomplished the feat~

Bill on track in the Batman Forever Thunderbat~
Bill Elliott #94 Batman Racing Champions 1/64 NASCAR diecast blog

Bill's final race in the Thunderbat came in the Miller Genuine Draft 400 @ Michigan~ He qualified miserably, and would start the race from 34th place~ He was able to climb twenty positions during the race, to finish in 14th spot, but was never able to lead a lap in the Batmobile~ I wish he could have ended it with a victory, but it just wasn't meant to happen~

Bobby Labonte again won the race, while Jeff Gordon, who led a race high 80 laps, finished in the runner up spot~ Rusty Wallace came home 3rd in the Miller Genuine Draft Ford, and John Andretti brought amazingly brought the #37 Kmart/Little Caesars Ford to the house in 4th place~ Morgan Shepherd, driving the #21 Citgo Ford rounded out the top 5, with his 5th place finish~

Bill pondering what he'd look like in Robin's tights~ :P
Bill Elliott #94 Batman Racing Champions 1/64 NASCAR diecast blog

Though his time was up in the Thunderbat, he still had the rest of the season to run in the #94 McDonald's Ford~ He finished the season with 0 wins, 2 poles (Pocono and Phoenix), 4 top 5's, and 11 top 10's, while having led 123 laps, and finishing 8th in the final points standings~ Following this season, Elliott would continue a winless streak that wouldn't end until the 2001 Pennzoil Freedom 400 @ Homestead~

Jeff Gordon ended up winning the 1995 Winston Cup Championship, beating out runner up Dale Earnhardt by 34 points~ Sterling Marlin was 3rd, 253 back from Gordon, with Mark Martin finishing 4th, 294 out of first~ Rusty Wallace rounded out the top 5 in 5th, 374 points behind Gordon~ A couple of surprises were Morgan Shephard, who finished 11 in the final standings, 996 back.. and Ted Musgrave, who finished in 7th place, 665 behind the Champion, Gordon~

Every detail is here in this wonderful Racing Champions replica, down to the smallest of secondary sponsors~ It's cool to see Purolator on any car, for me anyway~ The clear windshield, letting you see into the cockpit of the car, seems to be a first for Racing Champions, as far as I can recall.. lemme know if I'm wrong on that~ As this was a themed car, and not one he drove as a primary for a full season, I am gonna keep this post kinda short, and get more into his racing background and history during an upcoming post using a primary car~

If you've been collecting Racing Champions for a while, you'll know that there are so many different Bill Elliott cars out there.. it's unreal almost~ This was always one of my favorites that he drove~ It was such a big deal when he ran this car for the first time under the lights at Charlotte, and it's a shame the race had to end the way it did for him~ It was kinda sad when he went winless for so long, but it sure felt great to watch him get some wins again in his twilight years in NASCAR~ Below are some videos of the Batman car, as well as some random Elliott clips~ Enjoy, and thanks for stopping by~ Please share this post on Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media site~ :)
